Plastic Bottles are Dangerous
Last week, an article was released about baby bottles again. This time, it was on the latest study that showed three of the most popular brands of baby bottles (plastic) were found to have bisphenol A. And no, I didn't know what it was until I did some more research on it. I discovered it's controversial because it mimics estrogen- thus could induce strange hormonal responses - ie. infertility, breast cancer, and obesity.
I've posted the article in its entirety for any concerned moms on this topic. What's the answer? - I think it has become clear - to be safe, get rid of ALL your plastic bottles, and replace them with Glass, or Stainless Steel bottles. They may be more expensive - but worth EVERY penny.
A Canadian study suggests popular plastic baby bottles contain a chemical linked to cancer and infertility.
The group Environmental Defence says parents should stop using the bottles immediately.
Tests conducted by Environmental Defence suggest there may be significant levels of the chemical bisphenol A in three popular brands of plastic baby bottles sold in Canada.
Executive director Rick Smith said a selection of bottles by Gerber, Avent and Playtex were heated during testing and leached levels -- five to eight parts per billion -- of bisphenol A, which may sound minuscule, but are potentially dangerous to a baby's health.
"The fact that we are feeding it to our babies ... the implications of this are mind-boggling," he said.
He said glass bottles are a safe alternative.
Health Canada is studying bisphenol A and is expected to release its findings in May.

The worst part of it since this story came out?.....The Canadian Retailers have yet to pull them off the shelves. The Vice President of policy and research with the Retail Council of Canada, Peter Woolford, refuses to do it. (They represent the major retailers in Canada). Why? Here's his response:
"We are not in the business of censoring products. We rely on Health Canada as the authority to give us the guidance on that type of issue."
And what is Health Canada doing? Well, their report isn't due out until May - so until that time, these plastic baby bottles remain on shelves in all the major retail stores.
Unbelievable. So once again, it is up to us as concerned consumers and parents to educate ourselves and protect our children because clearly, no one else who holds any authority will do it. It's time to pass the buck - Let's not wait for the inevitable report from Health Canada in May stating that it is a danger - just take action now and throw out all plastic bottles in your home and don't buy any more.
If you are a mom with a baby, educate yourself about plastic bottles. And if you know someone else with a baby, pass this information on to them.

Yes - Medela (which provides bottles and breast pumps) has always contained Bisphenol-A Free plastic. Their Pump and Save bags are made of Polyester and Polyethylene which are materials deemed safe for the collection and storage of breast milk and do not contain Bisphenol- A.
I welcome other moms input and suggestions on this very serious health issue.
