ObamaAmericans elected Democrat Barack Obama as their first black president Tuesday, in a transformational election which will reshape US politics and reposition the United States in the world.

Barack Obama, who is 47, will be inaugurated as the 44th US president on January 20, 2009, and inherit an economy mired in the worst financial crisis since the 1930s, two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a nuclear showdown with Irac - but as I sat and listened to his speech last night - I was inspired....

I have never in my lifetime seen such a leader in the US. The last leader who I think inspired and lifted up the country was JFK. However, that was before my time.

When Obama spoke on stage - it brought tears to everyone in the audience. It gave hope to a country that is broken. It inspired and made proud all the african-americans who never thought they would live to see a day where a black president would be in power.

It has restored faith not only in the US but all around the world. People were celebrating everywhere because it meant that the US has done something right for themselves and for each other. He is a great leader. He will be a historical leader who will leave his mark on the world forever.

You see him speak and you just know you are in the presence of greatness. Although he has a tough road ahead of him - there is no one who is better suited to lead the US than him. Congratulations Amercia for choosing a leader who will do great things for your country.

As a proud Canadian, I watched history unfold in the US - and I am humbled.
